Jennifer Loveless presents “1.5m”, an audio-digital time capsule from the epicenter of Victoria’s COVID lockdown in 2020. The title track, an ode to now routine social distancing, embodies the sensation of agitation and inertia, tension and forced restraint. An aural looping pressure not dissimilar from daily life, heard through the push and pull of hoover like synthesis and droned tones. The militant drums of déja vu are fearless and harsh with broken syncopated rhythmic patterns that feel grounding and habitual. Though it’s not all severe and sombre, the contemplation brings slivers of joy, melodic flourishes and melancholic chord progressions weave in and out of the piece, signalling to the prospective silver lining. The Toronto born, Melbourne based producer is joined by her alter ego JLO, Female Wizard and Korea Town Acid to complete the release, reworks and individual mixes of the track to recontextualize and rouse concepts into new and intriguing directions. Collectively teaming up to channel the global energy and empathy of the desire to be productive, yet not being able to do anything.
